About
Bruin Young Tech Professionals (YTP) is a community of UCLA Students, staff, and Industry tech professionals who collaborate together for professional development,  incubation of ideas, and industry networking opportunities for undergraduate & graduate students interested in careers in tech.
The Focus of the Fall Bootcamp is to educate students on how to solve one of 3 "social good" problems (homelessness, food safety, fire incident data analysis) in partnership with County of Los Angeles. Using Google Ventures Design Thinking framework, the students will learn the required steps to produce a real outcome benefiting the local community.

The Problem
The yearly cost of food-borne illness in the US is $15.6 billion, which Los Angeles County contributes to heavily. This also costs the restaurant — it often costs restaurants $2.6 million if an outbreak occurs at their restaurant.
Currently, LA County has a database that contains a list of all registered restaurants in the LA County area with their ratings and violations. However, this database is difficult to navigate and understand. Restaurant Owners do not have the most streamlined and accessible means to view their health violations and how to improve upon them.
Insights
Restaurant goers are the ones primarily affected when a restaurant fails to meet a certain health standard. By increasing visibility of our ratings through a streamlined application with all information readily congregated, the public will have more visibility to the current database of health scores and hopefully have more awareness of different health score ratings.
Restaurant owners will have access to information about all their restaurants in one location. Having a more organized system will allow for better control of the information and quicker results about an inspection. And out long term goal is to have more efficient inspections overall, so making sure the restaurant owners are doing what they can on their end, then communication and transfer of information between owners and the county will be smoother
Solution
Our solution is a mobile app, so it is easily accessible to our 3 target audiences:
- allows health inspectors to prioritize their inspections in terms of urgency
- restaurant owners to improve their business by tracking their progress and staying organized
- we are giving the public transparent information which will help them make informed decisions about where to eat
We chose to prioritize restaurant owners and the public for the purposes of our prototype, but the system would address all 3 once implemented
